Tutoring for Vision Skills
What Is Vision Skills Tutoring?
Vision Skills Tutoring is one one-on-one instruction provided by a certified Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to help students strengthen or learn essential skills related to their visual needs. These sessions are customized for each learner and can support students of any age or ability, whether they are catching up, preparing for a new school year, or adjusting to recent vision loss.
Tutoring is available outside of the school day, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and is also available to homeschool students who may not have regular access to a licensed TVI. This flexible option helps families maintain momentum, fill in gaps, or focus on specific skills in a low-pressure setting.
At Virtual TVI, our certified teachers provide tutoring remotely through secure, live Zoom sessions with personalized goals, hands-on support, and real-time feedback. Whether your child receives vision services at school or not, tutoring can help reinforce what they’re learning or introduce new skills they haven’t been exposed to yet.
Who Can Benefit from Vision Skills Tutoring?
Tutoring is ideal for students who:
- Need extra practice on key vision-related skills
- Want to keep their skills sharp over summer or long school breaks
- Are learning new tools like screen readers, abacus, magnification software, or braille
- Have recently lost vision and need intensive instruction in alternative techniques
- Receive minimal school-based services but need more time to master skills
- Are homeschooled and need access to a certified TVI to support their learning
- Would benefit from previewing skills before they’re introduced in the classroom
- Thrive with individualized attention in a calm, distraction-free environment
Whether your child is developing early pre-braille skills, learning how to organize work visually, or improving their assistive technology skills, our tutoring sessions are customized to meet them exactly where they are.
What Do Tutoring Sessions Include?
Each tutoring session is designed around your child’s unique visual needs and the goals of the student and parent/guardian. A certified TVI may focus on:
- Strengthening visual efficiency such as tracking, scanning, visual attention
- Practicing assistive technology use such as screen readers, electronic braille, magnifiers
- Building foundational braille skills from tactile awareness to fluent reading
- Reinforcing ECC (Expanded Core Curriculum) concepts like organization, social interaction, and self-advocacy
- Adapting academic tasks to be more accessible and visually manageable
- Preparing for upcoming transitions such as a new grade level or new device
- Providing intensive support following recent vision loss or changes in visual function
Sessions are hands on, interactive, and designed to be engaging and age appropriate, whether your child is a preschooler exploring tactile symbols or a teen mastering keyboard commands for college prep.
