Compensatory Vision Services

Compensatory Vision Services

What Are Compensatory Vision Services?

Compensatory Vision Services are specialized instructional services provided by a certified Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to make up for services that were missed or not fully delivered during the school year, as outlined in a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). These services are designed to ensure that students with visual impairments receive the full support and instruction they are legally entitled to.

Compensatory services are typically offered over the summer, but they can also be scheduled during the following school year, depending on the student’s needs and the availability of the educational team. These services are paid for by the school district, not by the family.

At Virtual TVI, we work closely with districts and families to deliver high-quality compensatory instruction in a flexible and accessible format. Our remote delivery model allows students to receive services even when in-person staffing is limited or when families need options outside of regular school hours.

Why Might a Student Need Compensatory Vision Services?

A student may qualify for compensatory services if:

  • They missed scheduled TVI services due to staffing shortages, medical absences, or scheduling conflicts

  • Their IEP services were inconsistently delivered or documented

  • The instruction provided did not meet the specifications of the IEP

  • They experienced a regression in skills due to a lack of appropriate vision support

  • They transferred into a district without timely service continuity

The purpose of compensatory services is not to punish the school or assign blame—it’s to ensure the student’s right to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) is honored and that they have equitable access to learning.

What Do Compensatory Vision Services Include?

Just like direct IEP services, compensatory instruction is based on the student’s unique vision needs and educational goals. A certified TVI may provide support in areas such as:

  • Braille instruction

  • Assistive technology training (e.g., screen readers, electronic magnification)

  • Use of low vision tools

  • Visual efficiency and access skills

  • ECC (Expanded Core Curriculum) areas such as orientation, organization, and self-advocacy

  • Adaptation of academic materials for accessibility

  • Tactile graphics or concept development

  • Preparation for transitions (e.g., to a new grade, school, or device)

Services are tracked, documented, and communicated with both the family and the IEP team to ensure accountability and progress.

How Are Compensatory Vision Services Delivered?

At Virtual TVI, we make it easy for school districts to meet their compensatory service obligations with flexibility and professionalism. Here’s how we deliver:

  • Remote Sessions: All sessions are conducted live over Zoom with a certified Teacher of the Visually Impaired

  • Flexible Scheduling: Services can be scheduled during the summer, on weekends, after school, or integrated into the next school year

  • Clear Documentation: We provide session logs, progress updates, and reports that meet district documentation requirements

  • Individualized Instruction: Each session is based on the student’s needs and aligns with their IEP goals

  • Collaboration: With district approval, we can coordinate with the student’s school team to ensure continuity and alignment with existing supports

Partner with Virtual TVI for Compensatory Services
